Trying to Try New Things

by Kenna W.

Let me tell you something… I dislike new things. Change makes me uncomfortable. And both are scary. The worst thing about trying new things is the unknown. I don’t know what it will be like or what is expected of me. It could be boring and a waste of my time, which I could be spending doing something else that is more fun. And worst of all, I might not be good at it.

Usually my mom pushes me to try new things. She tells me “its going to be better than you expect” and “you can’t think everything new is going to be horrible”. So I try to focus on the good that could come of new things, like making new friends and maybe, just maybe, I might like it.

Recently I’ve been trying to saying yes to new things. Yesterday I said yes to entering a singing competition. I love musical theatre and when I sing during a performance I have my cast mates with me on stage. I have never done a singing competition before and getting up in front of people and singing by myself is a bit nerve racking. But I decided that I’m going to try because I want to get better at it.

The cool thing about new things is that they are only new the first time you do them. After that I know what it is going to be like and in most of my experiences with new things, they turned out pretty well. I would never have been able to find my love of singing if I hadn’t tried it when it was new. And the more new things I try the less scary new becomes.

My advice to you for trying new is to start by trying something that is similar to things you already like to do. Baby steps. But most importantly try thinking of the up side and never stop trying.
