Spider Chip Cookies

img_2450The secret to a perfect chocolate chip cookie is not in the chocolate chips but the salt!! But in this spooky halloween version of my most requested cookie recipe, it’s all about the spidery chocolate chips. These will be a hit at any halloween party, or just for family fun on Halloween day. The cookie recipe comes from my Better Homes and Gardens cookbook and the spooky chips were inspired by TastesBetterFromScratch.com.

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 3/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 1/2 cups chocolate chips divided
  1. Preheat over to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. In a medium mixing bowl, combine shortening, sugar and brown sugar with a fork.
  3. Add egg and vanilla, mix well.
  4. In a smaller mixing bowl, combine flour, baking soda and salt.
  5. Pour into sugar mixture and stir with spatula until combined.
  6. Add 3/4 cup chocolate chips. Stir well.
  7. Drop 1 inch sized balls onto a baking sheet spaced evenly apart.
  8. Bake for 9-11 minutes until just a hint of brown (Do not over bake! They will look a little raw with a hint of brown around edges and on top.)
  9. Remove cookie sheet from oven and place 3-4 chocolate chips into the tops of each cookie, point side up.
  10. Transfer cookies to cooling rack.
  11. Meanwhile, add remaining 3/4 cup of chocolate chips to a microwave safe bowl and microwave, on low power, stirring every 30 seconds, until melted.
  12. Just barely cut the corner off of a small ziplock bag (you want the hole to be very small to make your spider legs). Pour the melted chocolate into the bag. Seal it, then use it to draw spider legs on each of the chocolate chips.
Perfect your spider leg making skills on a plate or paper towel before trying on cookies. Makes 24 cookies.

  1. Use 1 cup of chocolate chips if you are making it without the spiders and do not melt the chocolate chips
